Robert B. Newman, 88, died peacefully in his home in Deerfield Beach Friday, August 7, 2015. He leaves his wife of 67 years Ruth; his daughter Susan (Joel); his son Eric (Laurie); his grandchildren Andrew, Lisa (Scott), Nathaniel (Katy), and Alyssa (Justin); his great grandchildren Elliana, Sasha, Joshua, Lyla, and Maxwell; and many friends in the central New Jersey area.
Robert was born in New York and graduated from New York University. He was a military veteran, serving his country as a photographic laboratory tech from 1945-1946. His work there involved studying jet engine airflow using high-speed photography. Robert’s professional expertise was photography and his career evolved as the field expanded, moving from small camera work, to large press cameras the size of a room, and finally to anodized aluminum graphic work such as designing airplane cockpit instrument panels.
Robert enjoyed learning new things for the sake of learning, not because it was required. As such, he would be best described as a Renaissance man, knowing a lot about a lot. His knowledge and passion spanned from science to the arts. Even his name was steeped in the latter – his middle initial “B” is for Browning, as he was named for the Victorian poet Robert Browning. He had an in depth knowledge, appreciation, and love of classical music and opera. Wagner was one of his favorite composers. He and Ruth attended the renowned Wagner’s Ring Cycle at Seattle Opera.
He will be remembered for his kindness, his work ethic, his knowledge, and his love of the arts and sciences, Judaism, his friends, and most importantly, his family.
Services will be held at Star of David, Bailey Rd, on Monday, August 10th at 12:00 PM. Interment at South Florida VA National Cemetery immediately following the chapel service.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Wounded Warrior Project, Nashville NPR Classical Radio, or Area Wide Council on Aging.
