Stanley Baumwald

Stan was born in New York, New York, to Nathan and Tessie Baumwald. He was a welcome surprise to his family—arriving nine years after his closest sibling as the youngest of three.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Tessie Baumwald, and his daughter, Sharon Upham. Stan is survived by his loving wife, Amy Baumwald; his children Steven Baumwald (Caren Schweitzer), David Baumwald (Monique), Jill Hendrickson, and Brett Hendrickson (Flavia); grandchildren Dr. John DeBevits, Ari (Abbie) Baumwald, Ilana Baumwald, Jenna (Scott) Pugh, Alec (Erica) Rutherford, Josh Rutherford, Zoe Hendrickson, Ian Hendrickson, and Mia Hendrickson; and great-grandchildren Shimmy, Leah, Sarah, Jacob, Brynn, Mila, Cadence, and Cassidy.

A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, Stan flew the F-84G Thunderjet during the Korean Conflict. His passion for aviation shaped his entire life. Stan moved to Minneapolis to begin his aviation career with Northwest Airlines in 1960. He became one of the first pilots to fly the Boeing 747-400. In 1979 he moved back to Florida until his retirement in 1990. He remained deeply connected to aviation history through his extensive collection of more than 4,000 airline wings. He co-authored an encyclopedia of Wings and Insignia of Pilots and Crews.

In addition to airline wings, Stan was a devoted collector of first flight covers, coins, and stamps—always captivated by the stories behind each item. He generously mentored aspiring pilots and served as President of the Quiet Birdmen (QB) chapter in Fort Lauderdale. While living in Minneapolis, Stan was also active in his synagogue, Beth El, where he found community and connection. Known for his sharp intellect, kind heart, and generous spirit, Stan left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 1, at Star of David Memorial Gardens, 7701 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale. Shiva will be observed at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 8, at the home of Steve and Caren: 2960 Pilgrim Lane, Minneapolis.
