Sidney lived in Minot through his formative years, graduating high school in 1963. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, where he was stationed for two years at the hospital in San Diego, CA. He then joined the Marine Corps for two years as part of the 2nd Marine Division FMF, stationed in Camp LeJeune, NC. He was honorably discharged in 1967.
After graduating Point Park College in Pennsylvania with a business degree, Sidney worked for Sears & Roebuck Company for many years. He also served as Vice President of Operations at Automatic Comfort in Connecticut. Later in life he was the owner and operator of Sid’s Home Repair before retiring to spend time with his wife and family.
His family fondly remembers Sid’s love of his home, especially his lawn which he took great pride in maintaining. He was an unabashed fan of Hallmark movies and the History Channel. Lighthouses were a popular attraction on any vacation he took. He was lovingly referred to as a Tom Selleck look-alike by his family.
Sidney will be most remembered for his kindness, generosity, honesty, thoughtfulness, and tolerance. He was always available to lend a hand to those in need, whether it be shoveling a driveway, working on a project, driving someone to a doctor’s appointment on a moment’s notice, or helping make a move to a new home. Sidney took pride in everything he did, and what he set out to do he did with excellence.
Sidney is survived by his beloved wife Angela Melius, and his five children: Jeanne (and Timothy) Johnson; Samantha Goodman; Matthew (and Leah) Melius; Stephanie (and Michael) Serrato; and Jonathan (and Aimee) Melius. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Danielle (and Blake), Travis (and Melissa), Lucas, John [LJ], Annabelle, Ryan, Abigail, Avery, and Mason. He is also survived by his two sisters, Dona Rennie and Sharol Durrenberger, and many nieces and nephews. Sidney is predeceased by his father Howard and his mother Anna Mae, and his brothers Gary, Dennis, and Dean. He was also a widower from his marriage to Rhea Elman Melius and is remembered fondly by the Elman and Bergman families.
