Katiana Preval was born in Bainet, Haiti, on December 20th, 1957 to Gerome Michel and Marie Petit. She had 10 siblings and was the third child from her mother’s side and the sixth from her father. Katiana has three daughters, six grandchildren, and an estimated 30 nieces and nephews.
Katiana was a very hard worker and fought hard for her kids and her family. She wasn’t just a grandmother; she was essentially the head of the family, as she worked really hard for her family. She didn’t mind working any kind of job to make sure her family was well taken care of. Katiana was a people’s person who loved helping everyone. She ate and drank with everyone. She always used to say, “If I was to go to school in this country, I would carry the palace on my back.” That’s why she takes pride in raising her kids well so that tomorrow they can become something major. Katiana had respect for everyone, even through anger, because she couldn’t stay mad for long as she would make amends with them in a short period of time.
She always used food as a way to bring people back together, even in madness. She’ll say things like, “I cooked for you; come on and eat.” Even after an argument, she was a woman with class and cleanliness, and she knew exactly what she wanted. Her preferred songs were “Gide’m Senye” and “Konfye’m Nan Dye." Those are the two songs she asked to sing on her behalf.
On December 9, 2023, when she was lying in the hospital bed, she wanted to give her life back to Christ. That was a beautiful thing that she wanted to do, and we give glory back to God. It is heartbreaking that she left us, but we understand that God gives and can take at any given moment. May God's amen be gloried. May your soul rest in peace!
