Today, we gather to celebrate the extraordinary life of Philomena Benoit Celestin, a woman whose spirit, kindness, and strength touched countless lives. Born in Au Cap Haitien, Haiti, to the late Princivil Benoit and the late Adelucia Nord Benoit, Philomena was the beloved sixth of thirteenth siblings in a family she held dear. Her early years were spent surrounded by the love and support of her large family, and it was clear from a young age that she was destined to be the matriarch.
Philomena's formative years were marked by her dedication to education and community. As a student at L’école Kay Mere Salesienne, she began to shine brightly, and her journey continued with her significant involvement at Don Bosco Church, where she served as the President of Kiro. Known affectionately as “Ti Philo” or “La Reine”, she worked at a bakery to support her family, demonstrating her commitment and love.
In her personal life, Philomena was married to the late Wilfrid Celestin. Together, they welcomed two daughters, whose passing was a profound loss. Despite these heartaches, Philomena's resilience remained unshaken. She drew strength from her family and her faith, continuing to build a life of purpose and compassion.
In 1981, Philomena embarked on a new chapter by moving to the United States. Her tireless work ethic and dedication to providing for her family were evident throughout her life. For over 30 years, she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Miami Jewish Home, where she was known for her deep compassion for the elderly. Her commitment extended beyond her work as she co-founded Les Bienfaiteurs du Nord, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of the elderly in Haiti—a testament to her enduring legacy of care and generosity.
As a faithful parishioner of Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church and an active member of Missionnaire de Jesus Kris Ministry, Philomena earned accolades for her dedication and her tireless fundraising efforts. Her vibrant personality and infectious joy touched many lives, and her generous spirit extended to celebrating birthdays with heartfelt calls and cards, ensuring that every person she knew felt loved and remembered.
In 2019, Philomena faced a significant challenge when a horrific accident left her paralyzed. Yet, even in the face of such adversity, she remained resilient and continued to enjoy the company of her family and friends. Today, as we remember Philomena Benoit Celestin, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and joy. Her laughter, her warm advice, and her birthday wishes were cherished by all who knew her. Her final piece of advice to us, “Hang in there,” encapsulates the strength and optimism she carried throughout her life.
Philomena, Ti Philo, La Reine, you will be deeply missed, but your legacy of love, joy, and strength will continue to guide and inspire us. May you rest in peace, Philomena. Your light will forever shine in our hearts.
On behalf of the family we extend our heartfelt thanks for your condolences.
