A proud and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Alroy (Al) Vanderpool, age 88, died peacefully January 10, 2025, at home with family at his side. As was his wish, Al was able to remain in his home for his final years thanks to the devoted and loving care of his son Michael and daughter-in-law Beverly as well as his beloved home health aide, Lily.
Al, the son of Lawrence and Marion (Rickerd) Vanderpool, was born in Onsted, Michigan on May 12, 1936. At the age of 20, Al married his high school sweetheart, Linda (Beck)—they had 4 children and enjoyed a beautiful marriage of 60 years until her passing in 2016.
In 1959 Al proudly joined the Ann Arbor Police Department “walking-the-beat” and eventually rising to the rank of Detective Sergeant. Al was also the police department’s hostage negotiator and polygraph operator at the time of his retirement in 1987. He then founded and ran a successful private venture in Saline, Michigan--Vanderpool Polygraph Service. Al was known for his unwavering honesty, calm demeanor, respect of all people and wry wit. Upon selling the business Al and Linda enjoyed an active (golf) retirement in Bradenton, Florida—welcoming northern family and friends often for extended visits.
Al was preceded in death by his loving wife Linda, his parents, his brother (David), a daughter-in-law (Patricia Vanderpool) and a grandson (Joshua Vanderpool). Surviving are his four sons, Mark, Jeffrey (Dawn), Michael (Beverly) and James; nine grandchildren, Zachary (Erica), Jacob (Tara), Maxwell (Sasha Laykova), Justin, Christopher (Mary Katherine), Benjamin (Samantha), Brandon Winfrey, Jaime (Kristy), and Loren (Jeremy Dunigan); as well as nine great grandchildren, Peter, Lucy, Jack, Luke, Henry, William, George, Kamdyn and Roman. Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Randall Beck, and several nephews.
Cremation has taken place and burial will be at Brookside Cemetery in Tecumseh, Michigan later this summer. If desired, memorial donations can be made in Al’s Honor to American Cancer Society or Family Church (select FC Sherbrooke Campus). Personal messages for the family may be placed at Dignitymemorial.com.
