Barbara Joyce (Callahan) Scarponi, 90, of North Palm Beach, FL passed away on Thursday, January 3, 2013 after a long period of declining health. Barbara was born in Hollywood, California, on September 23, 1922, to John Edward and Edith (Brown) Callahan. She is survived by a son Calvin Scarponi of North Palm Beach and Portsmouth, NH, and his wife Kimberlee, a grandson Christopher C. Scarponi of Boston, MA daughter-in-law Marcie Scarponi Harris, and several cousins and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband of fifty years Edmund T. “Monty” Scarponi and son Anthony Scarponi.
Barbara, better known as “Cal,” graduated from Concord (NH) High School, where she resided with her beloved maternal grandparents Dale and Libby Brown, in 1940. She met her future husband Monty in Hampton Beach, NH, and they were married where Monty was stationed in Waukegan, IL in 1946. They made their home and raised their family in Portsmouth until Monty’s retirement in 1973. Until his death in 1995, the couple divided their time between their homes in New Hampshire and Jupiter, FL.
Cal was an avid and accomplished golfer. She was active in the NH and New England Woman’s Golf Associations. She was a long-time member of Portsmouth Country Club as well as the winner of multiple club championships at North Palm Beach Country Club. She also enjoyed handicrafts of all types, bridge, TV quiz shows (especially Jeopardy), and the NY Times crossword puzzles. She loved to travel and visited friends throughout the country with her husband. After Monty’s death, she was fortunate to find a companion and old friend Phil Hoyt, and the two traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. Cal’s greatest love was giving and attending parties, where she could always be found among the laughter of her family and many friends.
Cal’s family wishes to thank the staff at Arden Courts in West Palm Beach for their loving and personal care during her last years. The kindness of this special group of Caregivers will not be forgotten.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Howard-Price Funeral Home, 754 U.S. Highway One, North Palm Beach on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 3:00pm until 5:00pm. In accordance with her wishes, Cal’s ashes will be spread with those of her husband and son at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to: The Richard D. McDonough Caddie Scholarship Foundation, 16 Salmon Street, Manchester, NH 03104.
