Donald LeRoy Zickert

He was born in Beloit, Wisconsin on December 7, 1932 to Verne W. Zickert and Sadie Zickert (Wegner). He was the youngest of 4 children. After graduating from Beloit High School in 1951, he attended the University of Wisconsin -La Crosse and Whitewater for 3 years.

He was a proud Veteran of the United States Army and served 2 years in Tachikawa, Japan from 1954-1956. He then returned home and graduated from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1957. He continued his education earning his Master of Science in Education in 1963.

Don was a talented tennis player, winning the Wisconsin State Tournament in 1954, playing for University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. He continued his tennis career in the Army, and later at Northern Illinois University, where he played #1 doubles. His days of playing tennis continued well into his mid-eighties, playing doubles with many of his tennis buddies.

He started his teaching career in 1957 as a fifth- grade teacher in Des Plaines, Illinois. He then taught elementary school in California for two years, returning to Berwyn, Illinois where he became a Principal. He spent the next 28 years as Principal for Lane Elementary School in Alsip, Illinois, and Hazelgreen Elementary School, where he retired in 1993.

Don was married to the love of his life, Caroline Sue Moore, on June 23, 1962, and resided in Flossmoor, Illinois until 1993, where they retired to Jupiter, Florida. They later moved to North Palm Beach, Florida in 2010.

Don is survived by his son Kurtis (daughter-in-law Evelyn), daughter Kara (son-in-law Dave), two granddaughters Taylor and Ava Levin, and sister- in -law Raquel. Predeceased by his wife Sue of 56 years, his brother Carl (Jane), sister Caroline Schindler (Ken) and brother Paul.

Don was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and close friends, in sunny Florida. He could often be found at the tennis club or driving his convertible around the Jupiter Inlet. He always had a kind word for everyone and a smile on his face. Don was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in North Palm Beach, Florida.
