Ned was born in Newton, MA but grew up in Atlanta, GA where he attended high school at Northside High School and the Downtown Learning Center. He continued on to receive a BS in Geology from Guilford College and an MSc in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Calgary.
Ned had a successful 40-year career as a geologist in the field of energy exploration, where he was an innovative pioneer in discovering untapped energy deposits and developing efficient methods of extraction. He began his career at Ceja Corporation of Tulsa, OK and then joined Kaiser Francis Oil Company, initially in Tulsa and later in Calgary, working there for over 30 years in various scientific and executive capacities, including as General Manager of Kaiser Energy and later as General Manager of Kaiser Exploration until his retirement in 2017. Ned went on to be a founding member of Conductive Energy, Inc., an enterprise dedicated to revolutionizing the extraction and processing of lithium.
Ned was a natural athlete who excelled at long-distance running and competitive rowing, in which he often medaled in national and world championships at the masters’ level. Ned was a dedicated booster and outstanding leader of the Tulsa Rowing Club, serving enthusiastically as President, coach, and volunteer over many years. Ned loved the great outdoors and was a life-long participant in outdoor activities, particularly fly-fishing, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing and cycling. Honed through frequent visits to some of the most beautiful rivers in North America, Ned’s fly-fishing prowess was storied, with an uncanny ability to read waters, wade the toughest runs and cast with art and precision.
Ned is survived by his wife Anita Zarn, his mother Cynthia Beattie Pearson, his daughters Laura and Carolyn (Cara), his sons-in-law Aaron Mankekar and Xavier Aristu, his stepmother Mary Ellen Sommer, his siblings David and Ellen Beattie, granddaughter Julianna Beattie Aristu, and his beloved nieces and nephews, Carla and Alex La Rotta, and Ursula, Althea, Miles, and Remy Beattie.
