

Dr. Fleming Joseph Hanley, Jr. of North Palm Beach passed away at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Palm Beach, Florida on March 6, 2015. He was surrounded by his children and fortified by his faith in God. Dr. Hanley was born on January 29, 1934 to Dr. Fleming J. Hanley, Sr. and Leila Carpenter Hanley in West Palm Beach, FL.
He attended St. Ann's Catholic School grades 1-12 in West Palm Beach; Loyola University School of Dentistry in New Orleans, Louisiana; and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for post graduate studies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Hanley, Jr. completed his internship at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida and completed his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana.
He also served as a Lieutenant in the Dental Corps of the United States Navy from 1958 to 1965 as a dentist and prepared the soldiers as they went off to war.
During his career, Dr. Hanley, Jr. was a member of the American Dental Association; the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine's Oral Surgery Society; the American Society of Oral Surgeons; the Florida Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; and the Palm Beach County Dental Society, serving as its president from 1976-1977.
For many years he was also active in the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) and local support groups, the American Cancer Society, the Knights of Columbus (Santa Maria Council 4999), the National Model Railroad Association, Inc., the Palm Beach Aero Club, and was a charter member of the Tri County BMW, Inc. Club.
While at Loyola, Dr. Hanley, Jr. met his wife, Marie Alice "Susie" Hanemann Hanley of New Orleans, and they married in 1957. He returned to the Palm Beaches in 1964 to join Dr. Fleming J. Hanley, Sr. in the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He subsequently opened his own practice in Palm Beach and later in West Palm Beach. For many years he also volunteered in Belle Glade, helping those in need of dental care.
Fleming and Susie raised their 3 children, Celeste, Joey, and Renee in the Palm Beach area. They were delighted to have their children live within mere minutes of their home in North Palm Beach.
After he retired from oral and maxillofacial practice, Dr. Hanley, Jr. enjoyed spending more time with his family and this included helping his son, Joe, of Joe Hanley's Tree Trimming and Landscaping, Inc. to build a successful family tree-trimming business. He enjoyed writing estimates and meeting with the customers.
At home, Fleming derived pleasure from working in his yard, riding his bicycle, and building fun things for his grandchildren, including a model railroad and a state-of-the-art tree house.
Whenever he received a phone call from one of his children asking for help, he was always there for them, giving advice, lending an ear, and giving a loving embrace.
Fleming was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marie "Susie" Hanemann Hanley. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Marie "Celeste" Hanley-Petrich and Dr. Kevin M. Petrich of North Palm Beach, FL; Fleming J. (Joey) Hanley, III and Karen Hopper Hanley of North Palm Beach, FL; and Renee and Tod Michaelis; his three grandchildren, Christian, Lacie, and Sophie Michaelis of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; his sisters and their spouses, Pat and Joe McNulty of Port St. Lucie, FL; Linda and Jack Brennan of North Palm Beach, FL; Nancy and Greg McIntosh of North Palm Beach, FL; his brothers and their spouses, Richard and Nancy Hanley of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and Danny and Denise Hanley of Palm Beach., FL; and many loving nieces and nephews.
The family will receive family and friends from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Howard-Quattlebaum Funeral Home, 754 US1, North Palm Beach, FL., followed by a rosary. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, March 20th at 2:00 PM at St. Clare Catholic Church, 821 Prosperity Farms Road, North Palm Beach, FL. Dr. Hanley, Jr. will be laid to rest at Queen of Peace Cemetery in West Palm Beach.
