Rita was born in Castine, Maine on July 4, 1931, to Clyde Houston Sellers and Laura Ella Wright Sellers. Rita lived in Poughkeepsie, New York as a child and graduated from Arlington High School in 1949. As a young woman, Rita lived in New York City with three close friends and worked as a secretary at the IBM headquarters on Madison Avenue. She then married and raised her family in Hyde Park, New York. Rita spent many years volunteering for the American Heart Association when her daughter was young which led her to returning to the workforce at age 50 as Director of Volunteer services at Northern Dutchess Hospital, Rhinebeck New York, before retiring to Jupiter, Florida in 1999.
The many highlights of her life were spending time with her family, living the beach life in Jupiter and returning to spend time in her beloved Hudson River Valley, volunteering at the Jupiter lighthouse, joining her family on many fun trips to Disney World, Ocean City and Lake George, white-water rafting and camping the Grand Canyon, trips to Big Sur & the California coast, painting in Spain, life-long learning at FAU and beach getaways with her friends.
Rita is survived by her three children Christopher Scott [Trish], Jeffrey Scott [Annie] and Laura Wright [Hugh] and her five grandchildren whom she was immensely proud, Chris’s children Sean Scott [Lisa], Dan Scott [Aly], and Jeff’s children David Scott [Hannah], Michael Scott [Amanda] and Hayley Scott. Rita was thrilled when she became a great-grandmother for the first time this year when Chris’s granddaughter Gemma Kelly Scott arrived. She was predeceased by both her parents and her only sister who she lost too early and missed dearly, Laura Lucille Staats. She is survived by Lucille’s children and many extended families on her father’s side in Cherryville, North Carolina, and her mother’s side in New York state.
A celebration of her life will take place on her birthday, next Fourth of July, she always loved being an Independence Day baby knowing everyone around her was celebrating too! She will be dearly missed by her family.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.howard-quattlebaum.com for the Sellers family.
