Alexander "Dooley" Philip Goumeniouk
2 novembre 1957 – 11 juin 2019

Dr. Alex (Dooley) Goumeniouk left this earth peacefully on June 11, 2019, with Lise at his bedside, and after a final evening of outrageous stories with family and friends and serenading by his favourite Elton John tunes. He was 61. The family is extremely grateful for the outstanding care and comfort from the staff of Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.
For 25 years, Dr. Goumeniouk served both as a clinical psychiatrist and professor (Clinical Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics at UBC) receiving multiple international teaching and fellowship awards. Over the same period of time, the physician/scientist/entrepreneur also became the founding medical director of Response BioMed and the clinical psychiatrist at UBC’s Huntington’s Disease clinic. As well, he helped establish three residential treatment centers for eating disorders and drug/alcohol addiction in addition to founding several private companies: CINEDOCs Consulting Corporation, Aequus Pharmaceuticals, Plan B Pharmaceuticals and Medex Technologies Corp. The creative visionary also held two US patents for innovative bio diagnostic testing and delivery.
Most recently he served as the director of psychiatry services at the Orchard Recovery Centre and consultant to several global pharmaceutical companies from his office on his beloved Bowen Island, where he lived large since 1989, sailing, golfing, gardening, launching rockets and handling the pyrotechnics as a volunteer fireman. Among other legacies, he will be remembered for his wild iconic style, and eclectic collections of colourful attire, shoes, eyewear, and watches.
Dooley was predeceased by his parents, Gleb, Violet, and stepfather, Fred Davies, also of Bowen Island, and his sister Tania, but he leaves Lise, his love and partner of 42 years, and their two children. This spring, he proudly celebrated the graduations of Natasha, from Queen’s Medical School, and Peter, from Western U Engineering.
His vibrant, larger-than-life presence in this world will be missed by his many friends from all walks of life, as well as his extended family (including sister Lisa and nephew Nicholas, niece Bianca, and Lise’s family).
A private celebration of Dooley’s eclectic life will be held at a later date and in lieu of flowers, perhaps consider registering for organ donation http://www.transplant.bc.ca or donating to the Transplant Research Foundation at the link below.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MeM.com for the Gourmeniouk family.
