At an early age Ted developed an interest and skill in playing soccer. Being agile and of short stature, he could easily weave in and out of players very quickly scoring those winning goals. In 1939, his team won the Lower Mainland Championship game in Vancouver and following their celebration they all marched down to Jericho barracks and joined the RCAF. His adventurous life of travel began with training camps in Manitoba and Ontario then later shipped to England. During WWII, Ted and his squadron resided in Burma; a very different life experience for a young 20 year old from Canada. Upon his return to England at the end of the war, Ted met the love of his life, Joyce Clarke, whom he married 3 months later. Ted returned to Victoria with his new bride, where 2 years later their only child, Gail was born. Ted continued his career in the Air Force which involved many life changes. The family moved to Edmonton, back to England, Vancouver, Calgary, the United States, and finally returned to Victoria, retiring in 1964. He loved Victoria and every summer, the family returned to spend a few weeks with his sisters, brother and their families at his sister’s beach house in Deep Cove.
While stationed in England, he was honoured as an usher at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. He also received a number of “congratulation certificates” from the throne and Governor General over the years.
When his grandchildren arrived in 1987 (Chelsea) and 1989 (Kyle), his role as the perfect grandpa began. This involved many ferry rides to visit them in Vancouver. He loved sports of any kind so thoroughly enjoyed watching all their sporting events and often vocalized his disagreement with the refs. He loved swimming in the ocean and insisted on family vacations at Parksville every summer with his grandchildren. So many memories! Over the years he spent hours fishing and boating on the coastal waters.
In 2007, Ted and Joyce moved to the Tapestry in Vancouver to be closer to their daughter and family. In 2017 Ted lost his beloved Joyce after 71 years of marriage and was lost without her but memories continued. At 99 years old, in 2018 he travelled with his grandson Kyle to the U.S. to attend his granddaughter Chelsea and husband Andrew’s wedding in Semiahmoo, Washington. In 2019 he celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends at the Tapestry. More special moments brought two great grandchildren, Madison in 2020 and Hudson in 2023 to lighten his life once again. After moving to South Granville Park Lodge in 2021 he celebrated 3 more birthdays before passing peacefully in his sleep on February 11, 2024. His quick wit and sense of humour will be in our memories as he touched the hearts of many people in his 104 years.
