Our Dad had a life well lived and his life, like him, was anything but mundane. Dad was born on February 19, 1937 in Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan. Due to his father’s health (as a result of the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic), the family moved to Kamloops, B.C. when Dad was young. The “Big City”, however, called Dad’s name and in his early 20’s he moved to Vancouver, to Lynn Valley, as a “big shot” in the grocery business.
His career path was not static and from the grocery business he went on to a career in Real Estate with Fullerton and Whyte. This, however, only ignited Dad’s true entrepreneurial spirit, which led him to “retirement” in his early 30’s and a career as an “Entrepreneur”. Dad was a Developer and a champion of the seemingly impossible project. There were never “problems” or “impossibilities”, only “challenges”, which Dad embraced with enthusiasm and gusto. Redevelopment and rezoning were Dad’s language and his skill set. Probably the biggest coup in his development career was the redevelopment of “Angus Lands” at the foot of Marine Drive. What was once vacant land below the Marine Drive estates were, with charm and grace, acquired by Dad and through years and years of sweet talking, hard work, determination and boundless enthusiasm, rezoned and, of course, redeveloped. A success story indeed.
Dad’s life was also full with his love of politics and the church. He was tirelessly devoted to these two arenas which he believed in unreservedly and gave his time and devotion to wholeheartedly.
Dad also attached great importance to family and in being a role model for us. His diligence and determination paid off as he leaves behind a loving family who will never forget his lessons, good hair, and positivity! In the words of his eldest grandchild,
“We will carry on Gramps legacy by being positive, confident, looking suave, and ‘walking around like we own the place’, and always with a laugh and a smile.”
Dad is predeceased by his son David (2015) and survived by his wife (“on sabbatical”) Maxine Horner, his eldest daughter Sharon McKee (Steve), their children Brittini, Max, and Samantha, and his youngest daughter Colleen Reimer (Andrew) and their daughter Anna. As well, the “Kamloops family” of nephew Ralph Willan (Eliza), niece Donna Crosina, nephew Allan Horner (Janice), niece Margaret Vaupel (John), and Brenda Matuga (Blaine) and the children of these nieces and nephews.
