He leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Paula, and their three sons, Tony (Elizabeth), Geoff (Jessica), and Stuart. Gordon was also the grandfather to, Ainslea, Grady, and Jake, who he loved dearly and spent so much of his time with.
In Gordon's younger years he lived in many places,, Burnaby, Kamloops, Prince George. As a teenager he spent some summers in Calgary working for his uncle in an automotive shop and he lived in Meritt, where on a brief hiatus from school, he owned a horse and drove trucks for Craignnont Mines. In 1964 he returned to school, in Prince George, where he met Paula, who he fell in love with. This is when he decided to change course and pursue accounting
Gordon's career was a testament to his incredible work ethic and his deep commitment to his clients and colleagues. He achieved his Chartered Accountant designation in 1970, while working with Thorne Gunn, Helliwell & Christenson. He would stay with the firm as it evolved into KPMG, where he would become an audit partner, specializing in the mining sector and working with the Vancouver Canucks. He made lifelong friends along the way and traveled to the Northwest Territories, South America and Europe with his work. In work and in life, Gordon was a trusted advisor, and his career not only helped shape his life but brought him satisfaction and fulfillment. After retiring as a Senior Partner in 2003, Gordon's ties to KPMG remained strong, and he continued to find joy in the relationships he had built. He took pride in the legacy of his work and the opportunities it had given him to see the world.
Outside of work, Gordon was a family man to the core. He loved coaching and managing his boy's soccer and baseball teams. His approach to parenting extended to the many things he taught them., most notably, how to repair just about anything that needed fixing in their homes or cars. Gordon was a great researcher and teacher,_ and his willingness to share his knowledge benefited so many. Gordon was never too busy to lend a hand, and his children remember him with deep affection and admiration for the time he gave, the wisdom he shared, and the values he instilled in them.
Gordon loved the outdoors and organizing family fishing trips, but his passion for skiing was particularly special. He spent countless days on Blackcomb with his family. * ok, let's be real here, he counted the days, recorded every single one in his calendar, and was more than to happy to let you know how many he had skied that season! His love for skiing never waned, and right up until March of this year, he skied with retired KPMG partners and his grandchildren 4 It was a tradition that kept him young at heart and something that he shared with his family proudly skiing on his 80th Birthday.
Gordon's loved his grandchildren, and he made a point to support and spend time with them, skiing, fishing, telling bad jokes, and offering plenty of advice (...so, so, so much advice). They all loved their Grandpa, his patience, his kindness and his generosity.
As we remember Gordon today, we think of the many roles he played in our lives: A Husband, a Father, a Grandfather, a Brother, an Uncle, a Colleague, a Friend ....and the Obsessed Arch-Nemesis of a local raccoon colony.... Having relocated many local trash pandas to a quaint stretch of the Fraser River in Coquilam.
He was a kind and loyal man, who lived a life full of integrity, warmth, and generosity. He was a man who loved life, loved animals and who found joy in simple things, like gathering on the slopes of Whistler, watching golf on TV, or mastering a particular dish. He lived life with a sense of purpose and commitment that inspired those around him.
Though we mourn his passing, we can take comfort in the fact that his legacy lives on in his family, in the memories we have of him, and in the many lives he touched throughout his 80 years.
A service to celebrate Gordon's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Oct. 24th, at Boat Chapel (1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver), with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. Thank you, Gordon, for the many gifts you gave us. We will carry you in our hearts.
