1935 - 2025
Joan was born in New Glasgow NS to Rev. Dr. Robert W. Braine and Evelyn Blanche Braine
(Whitman). She was predeceased by her parents and by her beloved husband, Geoffrey Harford Wilkins, and by her brothers-in-law Mike (Linda, Hazel) and Jeremy (Bob). She is survived by her sister Linda B. Braine, daughters Anne Rayner-Gould (Rod) and Wendy Lloyd (David), grandchildren Matt (Kristina), Heather (engaged to Matt), and Kelly (Jordan), great-grandsons Logan and Max, and by her nieces Valerie (Pat), Patti (Lionel), and Heather (Bill).
As a youngster, Joan showed great promise as a musician. While still in high school, Joan earned a Licentiate (a post-graduate degree) in the pipe organ from the London Royal School of Music, her final examinations undertaken by an examiner who travelled from the UK to assess her skills. She attended Mount Allison University in Sackville NB, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1956.
Joan and Geoff were married in 1956 and soon moved across Canada to North Vancouver BC, where they spent the rest of their lives. Joan was church organist and choir leader at North Lonsdale United Church for 47 years; and brought solace to seniors through hymn sings with Geoff in local nursing homes. After her retirement, Joan remained deeply involved in church life at North Lonsdale United right up until her passing.
As a true Bluenoser, Joan loved the ocean. Some of her favourite moments were spent sitting on a rock watching surf. She loved birdwatching, listening to classical music, reading, and walking. She had a wide circle of friends and kept in loving touch with many of them from her earliest years until her death. Her sympathy, kindness, and quiet warmth drew people to her all her life.
We thank Farimah and all the other staff at North Shore Hospice for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Joan’s memory to North Shore Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society. Celebration of life will be held at North Lonsdale United Church, October 3rd, 2025 at 2 p.m.
