Mr. John Leslie McIver

It is with profound sadness we announce the tragic passing of John "Jack" Leslie McIver. Born January 1, 1941 Jack made a grand entrance as Port Alberni's first baby of the year to parents Marjory and Leslie Brown. Marjory later remarried Duncan McIver and in 1948 Jack's sister Maureen was born. Jack came from humble beginnings and was raised on the coast of Vancouver Island. He caught the entrepreneurial spirit at a young age to help his family make ends meet. Jack began working in logging camps and on tugboats, quickly learning the skills needed for coastal life. In 1962 he married Catherine in Vancouver and in 1963 daughter Karen was born. With a young family Jack decided to work in the city to be at home with the family. With self-taught mechanical skills, Jack fixed wringer washers in the basement of the house which led to the opening of McIver's Appliances in 1964. In 1974 Jack married the love of his life Leslie. In 1975 daughter Trista arrived and in 1980 son Derek completed the family. Jack's lifelong baby was McIver's Appliances. Also known as "Mr. Speed Queen", Jack took great pride in providing the longest lasting appliances. His expertise and care led to many multi-generational customers. He always made sure the job was done right. Jack was still servicing the Lower Mainland with honesty and integrity for 55 years right up to his untimely death. He loved his family, his dogs and birds. While Jack had an incredible work ethic, when he was able to step away from the business he enjoyed being in his boat on the coastal waters which tugged at his heart. Jack loved the serenity of Salt Spring Island, the simple things in life, he had a sharp mind always followed his moral compass. Jack will be lovingly missed by his wife Leslie, sister Maureen, daughters Karen (Jon), Trista, son Derek (Sandy), grandchildren Jordan, Tyler, Devon and Declan.
