Predeceased by his life partner, Sheila Neilson, his brothers, Ronnie and Brian Schaefer, and his son, Chris Schaefer. Survived by his daughter, Sarah Schaefer, his sister, Carol Scott, and his nephew Jim. John also leaves behind his beloved cats, Tinker and Belle, whom which he truly adored.
John grew up on the North Shore and spent a large portion of his life working in the Lumber Industry for various companies including Hollyburn Lumber, IRLY Building Centres, and most recently TIMBER MART. John was instrumental in the development of TIMBER MART distribution business in Langley, B.C. throughout the past decade and retired only weeks before he passed away. John lived a vibrant and active life which he often documented with photographs and videos. He enjoyed computers and technology, walks along the Ambleside Sea Wall, spending time with his family and friends, and kicking back with a beer with his closest friends, Rod Sims, and Dave Alexander, at the local pubs. John will be remembered for his sense of humor, his charm and wit, his zest for life, his endless stories, his resilience, and most certainly his immense contribution and dedication to the lumber industry.
John was a devoted father, mentor, and good friend to many and he will be deeply missed.
His daughter would like to acknowledge and commend the North Shore Palliative Care Program and staff at Lions Gate Hospital for their contribution to John’s quality of life in his latter years.
In loving memory of John donations may be made to Katie’s Place, a volunteer non-profit animal shelter, who took in Johns beloved cats Tinker and Belle, (please see hyperlink below if you wish to donate).
A Celebration of Life will be held on February 11th, 2023, at 1:00pm at Boal Chapel 1505 Lillooet Rd, North Vancouver.
