It is with profound sadness the family of Lorne Makahanuik, age 67, announces his peaceful passing Monday April 21, 2025 at St Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.
Lorne was born and raised in Fort William (Thunder Bay), Ontario, leaving in his early 20’s to pursue his career as a travel agent; first in Regina and then in Vancouver where he resided for over 40 years. He had a passion for travel- especially in his early years.
He enjoyed board games, playing cards, and was proud to teach others the card games. At work he had used his creative imagination to devise games like scavenger hunts and bingos that his co workers had fun participating in. He was an avid reader, was great at telling stories, joking around, and being a tour guide to his visitors in Vancouver. He also enjoyed going out daily to the coffee shop to meet up with friends, doing his puzzles, and enjoying the outdoors.
Lorne always remembered holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and made a point of acknowledging them.
His sisters will miss his Vancouver Calendars that he sent to them yearly. He had all the specials dates marked on them and even showed off his artistic skills with goofy drawings.
During the last two years Lorne struggled to live his best life given all of the challenges he was facing.
Lorne will be lovingly remembered by his sisters Brenda (Ken), Wendy, and Gayle(Jim); his nieces Stephanie (Rich), Samantha (Anthony), Sharie (Bryan), Laura, Trina (Nick), Nadia, and Rosslyn; twin nephews Richard Jr., and Jaxon, and many great nieces, nephews and cousins. As well as his closest friends Doug, Michael and Clay, who were like family.
He was predeceased by his mother Hilkka, father Peter, his brother Richard, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family would like to thank Dr. Weiss and staff at Holy Family Hospital, B.C. Cancer clinic, and St Paul’s palliative care unit for the care and compassion given. Special thanks to his friends that would stop at his apartment and take him out when he couldn’t go on his own.
Respecting Lorne’s wishes, no service will be held.
