I was in her grade five class back in the mid 1970's.  She encouraged me to take on the role as editor of our school newspaper, Cascade Chronicles. She also taught about Barkerville and the Gold Rush in B.C.  Good memories!

I won't be able to attend but my sister is bringing my dad. She only has a two seater. (I got the short straw) If there's a brochure of some kind, would love a copy.

The first time I saw Betty was at a Burnaby Teacher Association Rep.Assembly meeting where she uttered the then unthinkable words "Strike!" "Who is this crazy woman?", I thought to myself. Then she muttered, "We'll go to jail, if we have to!" Thus began my long association with Betty. Along with two of my dearest friends, now also gone, she brought me from right-wing, upper middle-class thinking to left-wing working class thinking. I think of them fondly as my three "radicalizers"!

A few years later I found myself teaching in the classroom next-door to Betty. What good fortune! She gently shepherded me from a raw political hothead to a more clear-thinking progressive. I also admired how she could see the good in all children, even the few that I felt at the time had no redeeming qualities.

Betty was one of my heroes.  She helped me to become a better person,and I will always be grateful for having known her.

I will miss Betty. She taught me so much. My dad (also a retired teacher), sat with her on the corner of Canada Way and Edmonds during the teachers strike "Seniors supporting teachers" that made the local paper. She was definitely a "go getter". She was so proud of her family. We shared the love of knitting and books and she will always be a part of my greatest memories. My heart goes out to her family. She was a legend of the special kind. RIP Betty! I will miss you!

I am so glad to have known your mom through my music therapy work at her Independent Living Home in Burnaby. She was a beacon of strength, intelligence and caring- supportive of others, and teaching me so much about aging gracefully. Our Music Circle is missing her very much.

Oh my! She would talk of her daughter studying wolves and of her weekend archaeological digs on local properties  in Burnaby where she would find Indian beads...or how she was touched to her heart by a young Korean student who couldn't speak English and wanted just to hold her hand. Mrs Griffin was an intelligent and profoundly caring individual. She took the time to get to know her students and their stories.  There were many teachers in my life but few taught with such sincerity and humility. I will always cherish my year with her as my teacher. She was a special soul.

i recognize that face (has not changed) and name from my school days in burnaby. mrs. griffin was an awesome teacher, never to be forgotten. sorry for her family's great loss. looks like she lived a wonderful full life. my condolences to all her family and friends. thank-you mrs. griffin for all you did for others in your lifetime. may she rest in peace now. mary kinney (now, wenzel)

Sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of getting to know both Betty & Hal when I was involved with the UFAW Union and through my mother's(Ruby Bitz) involvement with the senior's group. She will always be an inspiration to me.

Wow, Sean, your mom outlived so many fabulous peers like her, who worked tirelessly at meetings, lessons, writings, speeches, marches, benefits, celebrations, singalongs, picnics, door to door, side by side -- I have many memories of Betty listening, speaking, smiling, and working alongside her mighty generation. Much love to you, Sean, and to your whole family.
