

Vancouver. He was in his 101st year having celebrated his 100th birthday in May. Rees was
born in Hillcrest, Alberta and was the youngest son of Samuel and Catherine Richards. Rees
had seven siblings, Harold, Cliff, Bill, Cyril, Sam, Peg and Mary.
Rees attended school in Hillcrest completing grades 1 through 12. In 1939 Rees did his
Teacher’s Training at the Normal School in Calgary, Alberta. His first teaching assignment was
at Westerdale School where he taught students from Grade 1 to 10.
On January 8, 1942 Rees joined the Army and served in Canada until demobilization on
February 22, 1945, to return to civilian life. Rees then attended UBC and completed his
Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing and Accounting.
Rees taught at Burnaby South High School commencing in 1950 and retired in 1983. He
enjoyed teaching his students math, general business, academic and general commercial
subjects. Teaching was his passion and was a rewarding career.
Rees married twice, his first wife Jean passed in 1978. Rees then met Alannah Rowlett and
married again in 1980. Alannah passed away in March 2019. Rees and Alannah enjoyed
travel, visiting family and friends in their retirement.
Rees was a gentleman and a scholar and a loving husband to Jean and Alannah.
