Surrounded by his family, our beloved Richard Moon, known by his friends as Dick, slipped away peacefully in the early morning of February 1st. A proud husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many, Dick is survived by his loving wife Teresa, son Marcus, daughters Jude (Dan) King, Misty (Micah) Shaw, grandchildren Morgan and Rhiannon (Schmitt) King, Lochlan and Piper Shaw, great grandchildren Wynter and Navy King, Sisters Sally, Peggy and Jenny, nieces, nephews, in laws, and extended Cline and Young families. He is predeceased by his parents Olivia (Kelly) and Jack Moon and his brothers Robert and Patrick.
Dick was born in Bombay, India on December 12, 1940, to Anglo descendant parents Olivia (Kelly) and Jack Moon. His father Jack held the prestigious position of Deputy Harbour Master of Vishakhapatnam. With the Indian independence in 1947, Jack made the unselfish decision, sacrificing everything to move his family to Canada for a stable and better future for his children. A country full of promise, that they could belong to and call their own.
The Moon family embarked on the long journey via ship to New York and arrived in Canada in 1954. Dick, the eldest of the six siblings was 13 years old, and full of wonder at the new opportunities presented. Settling in Vancouver, it wasn’t long before Dick, wanting to emulate his father, began working on the dredges as a teen, a deck hand, and a cook helper on tow boats, rising to Captain for Rivtow Towing, and finally the ultimate prize, becoming a British Columbia Coast Pilot in the early 80’s and retiring in 2016. He had the honour of serving the BC Coast for 32 years. A career he truly loved that brought him extreme pleasure, great respect and pride. Some would say he was a legend on the British Columbia coast.
From the time Dick could legally drive, his penchant for classy, fast, pricy, classic, old, new, and collector cars were an obsession. The amazing cars and motorcycles he owned over his lifetime were the envy of many. It was just part of his classy style. His last car which he considered his baby, a 1955 Pontiac Star Chief. His hobbies included traveling, motorcycles, music, dancing, socializing, playing poker, horse races, reading, camping, and in his retirement years, any chance to make you one of his coffees, when you came to visit.
Not only did he have spectacular taste in cars…he was known for his spectacular taste in women. The last 25 years have been spent with his long-time love, Teresa (Tere) and almost 15 years ago they welcomed the birth of their pride and joy, Marcus. Dick’s retirement years were spent enjoying friends, family, traveling regularly to their second home in Gibara, Cuba and other travel adventures. Family, sun, beaches, rum and music filled his final years.
Richard Moon was a grateful, courageous, and determined man in all aspects of his life. He touched so many lives and meant so much to so many. He worked hard, loved hard and played hard. That is how we will remember him, larger than life and living large.
Dick Moon leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories and he will forever remain alive in our hearts.
