Valerie Anne Swannell passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024, at Lions Gate Hospital, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a touch of mischief.
Born on April 27, 1955, in Calgary, Alberta, to Robert and Dorothy Swannell, Val eventually made West Vancouver her home and became one of its proudest residents. She graduated from Sentinel High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of British Columbia, initially aspiring to become a veterinarian. But, true to her adventurous spirit, she pivoted to a career in business, finding excitement in sales, advising executives, and solving complex problems.
Val’s illustrious career included roles in banking, IBM, and Mobile Data International before she founded her own successful management consulting company. Her brilliance in problem-solving and her knack for generating creative insights earned her the admiration of many in the tech world.
In 2010, Val was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a challenge she faced with her characteristic determination and resilience. She joined the board of directors for the Parkinson’s Society of BC, dedicating herself to fundraising efforts, particularly the annual Parkinson’s Walk for a Cure.
When later diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare and challenging condition, Val continued her advocacy with unwavering hope. Defying the odds, she lived a full fourteen years following her diagnosis, far exceeding the typical prognosis of six to seven years. Her tenacity and indomitable spirit inspired all who knew her.
Val was known for her statuesque beauty, athleticism, sharp wit, and infectious laugh. Her adventurous nature shone through in her love of travel, exploring the world with a sense of wonder and a talent for turning strangers into friends. If you had the pleasure of knowing Val, you’d remember her clever jokes, daring mountain drives, and fearless haggling in bustling markets.
She is survived by her spouse and soulmate, Lyn Blanchard; her older brother, Geoff Swannell; her sisters- and brothers-in-law Steve and Carla Blanchard, Mike and Pam Blanchard, and David Blanchard; and her beloved nieces and nephews Kira Swannell, Zach Swannell, Eryn Blanchard, James Blanchard, Tory Blanchard and Scott Blanchard. Predeceased by Beverly Blanchard. Val’s greatest joy was her family, her friends, and her gift for building connections that enriched the lives of everyone she met.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday February 12, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Gleneagles Golf Clubhouse in West Vancouver. Join us as we laugh, cry, and honor an extraordinary woman who could light up a room just by walking into it.
In lieu of flowers, please consider raising a toast to Val on a sunny patio—she’d want you to enjoy every moment, just as she always did.
