Vera’s Journey
Vera was born on June 6, 1924 in Port Arthur, Ontario. She was one of five children to Ethel and George Flaxman.
While living in London, Ontario, she met the love of her life, Francis “Frank” Denton Borton. They married when she was 17, on March 28, 1941. The couple was blessed to welcome five children into their lives, between 1941 and 1959.
As their family expanded, they moved several times. Relocating to BC, they established new beginnings in Trail, Kelowna, Prince George, Quesnel, New Westminster, Vancouver, and White Rock, but never forgot the friends they had made along the way. She worked for periods throughout their marriage, but home life was always her first priority. Family was the most precious gift to her, and she treasured gatherings as opportunities to bond, share, and laugh. The pillar of our five-generation family, GG was very keen on genealogy, often relaying stories about heritage and ancestors to be passed on to future generations.
A devoted Christian and active church member, she volunteered for events, in keeping with her kind and caring nature. She believed in seeing the good in people, and extended genuine care, kindness, compassion, and understanding to people from all walks of life. She was very outgoing, and enjoyed attending social events, never afraid to strike up conversation with a stranger.
Vera’s life took a devastating turn in May of 2008 when her daughter Marlene passed away at the age of 66, followed by her husband Frank, who joined Marlene in Heaven only 20 hours later. She departed to meet them again 12 years later, on Marlene’s birthday.
Predeceasing her are sisters Grace, Ivy, and Doris, and granddaughter Valerie.
She is survived by sister Winnifred “Winnie”; children Richard “Rick” (Gladys), Randy (Guixi), Debora “Debi” (Raymond), and Melody (Monte); grandchildren Corina, Jineen, Krista (Chad), Kevin, Wanetta (Dan), Ira (Gwen), Lavanda (Sean), Barrie (Priscilla), Juanita, and Melody-joy; great-grandchildren Jenna (Matt), Jaleesa, Taylor, Mikayla (Lincoln), Nicholas, Dragon, Olivia, Kayla, Tyler, Steven, Devan, Vincent (Frankie), Jade (Brady), Hayley (Devan), and Tavis; and great-great-grandchildren Ryan, Makenna, and Kaiden.
Though we will miss her dearly, we know that she would not want us to grieve her parting, but to remember her smiling, and to rejoice that she has gone Home to be in the arms of Jesus - a journey that she spent her entire life preparing for. We are comforted too, that she is now reunited with her beloved husband and daughter, whom she missed tremendously.
A private family celebration in her honor will be held in June, where we will gather for a weekend to reminisce and share memories.
Vera is under the care of First Memorial Funeral services. Those wishing to share a message or memory may do so at www.dignitymemorial.com.
