Violet Joan Johnston passed away peacefully on Friday, January 1st, 2021, at home after an ongoing battle with cancer. She was a Winnipeg born Vancouverite who lived the last 55 years of her life nestled within the forests of North Vancouver, enjoying her family, friends and the home she and her husband Doug built together. Before becoming a full-time mother, she worked at Little Flower Academy and moved into adjudication and testing at the University of British Columbia before retiring to enjoy personal interests in her latter years. She is survived by her two children - daughter Kimberly and son Ian, her son-in-law John and daughter-in-law Eliza and her most beloved beautiful grandchildren Eva, Otis and Astrid.
Always balancing a uniquely pragmatic approach with a great sense of humour, Vi was never afraid to laugh at herself or the situation. She actively encouraged others to participate in lighthearted humorous activates that brought her family together. Not many could match her excellence in Yahtzee, crossword, card games and 10K piece puzzles. Vi had a great love of mystery novels and, in great contrast, professional tennis, encouraging everyone to join in on her pursuits to share in the excitement of an intriguing murder mystery or a competitive tennis match. Her love of cooking and tradition taught all of her family about the joys of cooking homemade perogies and the celebration of the lightest cheesecake ever to be tasted.
There will not be a day that goes by, a new mystery show watched, or martini drank that we will not remember this wonderful mother, grandmother, wife and friend. Enthusiastic and feisty to the end, she would have told us “that a good haircut goes with everything” and may the music of Abba always be in our hearts eternally playing Dancing Queen as we sail through life.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation https://lghfoundation.com/donate. Please select the designation to the Chemotherapy Unit as the team within this department took the best of care of her and she would want them to be able to continue to care for others in need.
A celebration of Violet’s life will be scheduled for the Summer or Fall 2021 when COVID-19 conditions will allow all her family and friends to join together to raise a glass. We will repost more details as they become available.
