We announce the passing of Vi, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Vi departed peacefully in her sleep after a brief struggle with cancer.
Born in Revelstoke and raised in Sicamous, Vi was a beloved fixture in the communities she touched throughout her life. She came from a strong family with hard-working parents, Emil and Helmi Reinikka, and was the little sister to her brother Gunnar, and sisters Anneli and Miriam. She is survived by her devoted husband Ted, and her two children, Terry and Cheri. She leaves behind five adoring grandchildren, Kris, Stefan, Danielle, Cameron, and Emily, as well as four great-grandchildren, Isabella, Zachary, Sloan, and Scotia.
Vi’s journey took her from Sicamous to Vancouver and Kamloops, where she initially settled with her first husband, Edward Whale. Following their separation and subsequent divorce, Vi returned to Sicamous, where she made significant contributions to her community, including her work at Eagle River School, co-founding the Sicamous Citizen newspaper and an office supply store with her second husband, Greg Critchley. Despite the economic hardships faced by small towns in the 1970’s, Vi’s resilience shone through.
In 1978, Vi relocated to North Vancouver and worked for the District of North Vancouver for many years. After Greg’s passing in 1989, she found love again with Ted Mackie, marrying him in 1992.
Vi, affectionately known as Grandie to her grandchildren, had a special knack for making holidays and birthdays memorable with her thoughtful gifts and treats. Her kindness, calm demeanor, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A private celebration of life will be held for family members and invited guests to honor and remember a woman whose love and pride for her family knew no bounds
