

Don was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Gay Scrivner and his father, Irving Shields.
After graduating from Tuscaloosa County High School in 1957 and briefly attending the University of Alabama, Don enlisted in the United States Army serving as a member of the Reserves for six years. During these years, Don was employed by Gulf States Paper, BF Goodrich, and Reichhold Chemical where, as he stated, "he always seemed to be the last employed and the first to go." Don moved his wife (Elaine) and twin children to Linden, Alabama after being employed by Georgia Pacific Naheola, Alabama.
While living and raising his family in Linden, Don was an active member of Linden Baptist Church; involved member of the community; and supporter of Marengo Academy where his children attended school. In 1987, Don and Elaine moved to Butler where they were members of First Baptist Church. They remained there until Don's retirement from Georgia Pacific in 2006 completing 41 years.
After retirement, Don and Elaine moved to Northport, Alabama to be close to family. Survivors include his wife, Elaine Shields; son, Randall Shields (Cindy) of Alabaster; daughters, Ramona Hall (Greg) of Albertville and Rachel Taylor (Marcus) of Fayette; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be Drake Tyner, Marcus Taylor, Greg Hall, Scott Bonner, Terrell Elmore, and Phillip Coward.
Honorary Pallbearers are Fitness One Gym, Northport; Mill Employees who worked with Don in the Georgia Pacific Power House, Naheola.
The family visitation will be held on Monday, July 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home. The funeral services will be at 10 a.m. in the Chapel at Sunset Funeral Home followed by interment in Sunset Brown-Service Memorial Park. Dr. Ken Cheek will be officiating. Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, will be directing.
