
Edward A. "Arnold" Hughes, age 92, of Northport, died July 7, 2013, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Cecil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arlu and Virgie Stripling Hughes; his wife, Reba Junkin Hughes; his brothers, James William Hughes and J.D. Hughes; and his sisters, Klara Kate Hughes and Mildred Hughes Ray.
Survivors include his sons, Louie (Vanessa) and David (Denise); his sister, Joyce Maxey (Max); his grandchildren, Stephanie, Adam (Suzann), Erin H. Jett (Josh), and April Hughes; and two great-grandchildren, Mason and Miller.
He was born in Pickens County near Springhill Church. After graduating from Palmetto High School, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in Oregon. He served in the 9th Air Force during World War II and after participation in the Battle of the Bulge victory, stood inside of Hitler's Eagles Nest. After returning home, he married Reba Junkin from Pickens County. They were married almost 60 years before her death. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service. After retirement he loved farming and gardening and was known for his green thumb. Respected by all who knew him, he was a good, kind, honest, honorable, hardworking Christian man and a member of Flatwoods Baptist Church in Northport.
Pallbearers will be Josh Jett, Adam Hughes, Harry Hughes, Ken Junkin, Dennis Sudduth, and Jody Hayes.
