Ms. Larla C. Daniels Hooks was a native of Barbour County (Clayton) Alabama. She was born on March 13, 1936, to the late Rev. Howard E. and Mrs. Sallie Diggs Daniels. Ms. Larla Hooks departed this earthy life at Park Manor Health and Rehab in Northport, Alabama.
Ms. Hooks confessed her belief in Jesus Christ at an early age as she became a teenager and was baptized as a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Clayton, Alabama.
Ms. Hooks attended the public schools in Barbour County and completed high school education at the Barbour County Training School in Clayton, Alabama. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in Alabama State College for Negroes in Montgomery, AL. She quickly discovered that she was not ready for college and left without obtaining a degree. She moved to Detroit, Michigan and lived there for a short period of time before moving on to California where she worked in housekeeping service. It was there in California that she experienced her first attack with her health. She quickly rebound from that attack and returned to her home in Clayton, Alabama with her parents, where she continued to undergo treatment. Larla did not let that stop her she moved on to pursue her goals to live a full life. She moved to Birmingham, AL, where she worked as a nurse attendant while attending Lawson State Jr. College. Larla met the love of her life in Birmingham and married Mr. Isaiah Hooks and the two of them worked hard to purchase a home in the West End of Birmingham. Due to the illness of her husband Isaiah, Larla took on many jobs to support the family when she experienced her second attack. With her health being fragile the stress of all became over-whelming. Larla waged an on-going lifelong battle to restore her health. During this situation, she could not keep what they had worked so hard for, as well maintain the lifestyle that she was accustomed to. She and her husband suffered a great loss and had to undergo many challenges to survive. They were able to stay together until she had to be admitted to the hospital for Mental Health Service. Most of the time, as an outpatient, she was able to set up housekeeping, and both were reunited again. It was during her last stay in the hospital that her husband Isaiah Hooks passed away and she had to seek different living arrangement which resulted in her living in many group homes and women shelters such as First Light Birmingham Women Shelter. Her family supported her in her quest to live out-side of the Hospital and group homes by providing whatever assistance needed to keep her in a facility that would allow her the opportunity to live-out her days, in an environment that was safe and could provide the health care that she needed.
Through it all, Ms. Hooks maintained an Abrahamic type of faith. Whether right or wrong, whenever her faith was challenged, she would rather suffer than to give-in or relent. As a human being, her personality was kind and easy to get along with. Larla was a generous and gentle hearty person who loved everyone. She didn’t possess a lot of this worlds’ goods – but what she had was quality. She lost much of what she did possess to the point of being homeless and living on the streets of Birmingham, Alabama for more than two years. Again, through it all, God took care of her when her family and friends tried to but could not.
Ms. Hooks leaves to cherish her memory: three sisters, Mrs. Sallie Belinda Horton of Detroit, MI; Mrs. Perdie C. Greene of Arlington, VA; and Mrs. Willie M.
