

NORTHPORT | Ray Devan Cooley, age 75, of Northport, died December 11, 2014, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Bethel Presbyterian Church with Michelle Hunter officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sunset Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to services at the church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carsner and Byrdie Cooley; brother, Ralph Cooley; sister, Lorine Cooley; and granddaughter, Amanda Cooley.Survivors include his wife, Vina Lee Cooley; sons, Ray Denny (Connie), Richard (Janet), Steve (Dama), Gary (Beth) and Todd (Candy); sisters, Charlotte Cooley and Edna Busby; grandchildren, Brandon Cooley (Erica), Joshua Cooley, Melissa Ward (Arthur), Daniel Cooley (Mary), Bryan Cooley, Keighla Cooley, Taylor Cooley, Brian Cooley, Tabitha Cooley and Allison Cooley; great-grandchildren, Abbi Cooley, Garrett Cooley, Karsen Cooley, Gavin Ward, and Thomas Cooley; and special friends, Donna Kernop and Wade and Gail West. Mr. Cooley was born on April 16, 1939 to the late Carsner and Byrdie Cooley. He spent most of his younger years in the Vance community and attended Brookwood High School. In 1957, he married Vina Lee Grammer and together they raised five sons. After his retirement from the U of A, he and Vina enjoyed traveling across the country in their RV. Pallbearers will be sons and grandson, Brandon Cooley, Curtis Clements and Clay Smith.Honorary pallbearers are University of Alabama Maintenance Dept., Hospice of West Alabama and Glen Haven Nursing Home.
