He attended Etteca Grammar School then Gorgas High School where he so enjoyed playing on the basketball team. Eventually he went on to work for Perry Creamery before joining the Army Air Corp in 1946 when he spent most of that time at Lowry Field in Denver training as a mechanic. Following separation from the military he returned home and married his sweetheart, Evelyn. Joining the ranks of many county residents he began employment at the new BF Goodrich plant where he worked 43 years until retiring in April 1990. One year when floods in Northport prevented travel across the bridge, he walked across the train trestle to get to work. Following retirement from Goodrich, he went to work again, becoming a driver for local car dealerships, spending 26 years with that. In between the work, he enjoyed traveling, gardening, learning new things to do, watching the Atlanta Braves and basketball, tinkering with watches, maintaining bee hives, and watching creatures of nature.
He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Alta Rice and his brothers Malcolm and Malvie Oswalt, his sons-in-law James “Tommy” Storey and W. Pelham Blackburn.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Evelyn Tierce Oswalt, to whom he was married for almost 77 years. He is also survived by his three children Scarlett Storey, Anthony Oswalt (Bo), and Jennifer Blackburn; three granddaughters, Rebecca McKenzie (Jim), Kristina Fanning (Jimbo) and Lorna M. Secondi (Jason). They were blessed with great-grandchildren James McKenzie III, Andrew McKenzie, Eliza Murtland and Cadi Secondi, and nieces and nephews.
