Vera Elizabeth Hayes

Vera Elizabeth Hayes, age 83, of Northport, Alabama joined her husband of 55 years, Billy C. Hayes, in Heaven on Saturday December 11, 2021. She was born September 3, 1938 to John Edgar and Veral Odell Beasley in Jefferson County, Alabama.

Vera is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Charles Beasley.

Vera is survived by her son, Ken Hayes (Lisa) and daughter Kay watson (Terry) as well as her grandchildren, JC Hayes, Allison Chandler (Cody) and Adam Watson (Lia). She was blessed with great grandchildren, Miller Chandler and Eli Watson.

Vera Hayes, or Nan, as most of her family and closest friends called her, was born at home on Jefferson County in 1938. Raised on a working farm in Bibb County, she was proud of the fact the she started driving barefoot on an old Farmall tractor laying corn by. She ended up driving new Winnebago motor homes and 50' house boats with our dad. In between, she raised 2 children and helped raise 3 grandchildren.

She worked for 25 years at General Motors Corporation as a fork lift operator and a proud member of the United Auto Workers Union. She served her union brothers and sisters as Union Steward several times over the years.

Vera died peacefully, at home, on Saturday December 11, 2021; but there is no need to mourn in sadness for her. She will be laid to rest beside her loving husband and our dad, Bill, at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in west blocton following a Celebration of Life service.

The family will receive friends for Vera Wednesday, December 15, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Sunset Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will follow in the chapel of Sunset Funeral Home at 11:00 AM. Bro. Terrell Jones and Bro. Andy Rice will officiate the services.

Serving as pallbearers will be JC Hayes, Adam Watson, Cody Chandler, Blaine Beasley, Terry Watson and Jim Rice.
