Neil was born on April 23, 1931 in Norwalk Connecticut, the son of Gennaro Diorio and Philomena Mazzucco and was the older brother of the late Gene Diorio. He graduated from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont and earned his doctoral degree in medicine from the University of Vermont Medical School of Medicine where he met his wife Evelyn Wittig. Neil and Evelyn married on April 16, 1955. He spent several years practicing medicine while serving as an officer in the United Sates Navy before he and Evelyn moved with their six children to Northridge, California. Shortly after arriving in Southern California, Neil accepted the position of Chief of Radiology at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Santa Clarita, California. He retired from medicine in 1991 and made a home in several cities across the southland including Chatsworth, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks, and Laguna Woods where he spent his final days.
Neil was an exceptionally caring and generous man that often put the needs of others ahead of his own. He thrived at social gatherings and made friends wherever he went. He initiated a retired physicians’ organization, hosted card games, and created a dining club called Old Retirees Eating Out (OREO’s). The bounds of his knowledge seemed endless and his thirst for learning was never satisfied. After retirement, he began writing and was successful in publishing several books including a cook book and several dramatic thrillers. He could speak at length on many subjects outside his field of medicine including history, geography, construction, and horticulture among others. He was truly a man of many talents.
Neil is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn, six children, Lynn, Gene, Karen, Maria, Neil, and Mark, 11 grandchildren, Nicole, Steven, Dominic, Kanan. Bo, Dustine, Kylie, Cameron, Megan, Neil, and Tahylor, and two great grandchildren, Nolan and Francesca. He was dearly loved and will be forever missed.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. at Bastian & Perrott, Oswald Mortuary in Northridge, California.
