Roland L. Bassett of Northridge, California succumbed to cancer and peacefully passed away November 10, at the age of 89. Roland was born in Lead, South Dakota. He graduated from Nampa High School in Idaho, and at age 17 he enlisted in the Navy and served 3 years. While at the University of Idaho he was President of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, met the love of his life, Lois Walker and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. In 1959, he graduated and married his beautiful bride, Lois.
Roland and Lois relocated to Southern California in 1960. Roland earned his Master’s degree in Engineering from UCLA. He worked at Litton Industries for 5 years and at Hughes Aircraft Company for 28 years. He retired in 1993 and enjoyed fishing trips in Idaho, and many years of hiking and golfing. For his creative outlet he had a passion for woodworking; also known as ‘making sawdust.’ He repaired and built furniture, crafted birdhouses and made many improvements for St. John Eudes Church and School.
Roland was a loving father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his son Mike Bassett, his wife Dana & stepchildren McKenna and Zach Coppel of Eugene, Oregon, daughter Lynn Bassett Israel & her husband Scott of West Hills, CA, grandson Andrew Israel of Seattle WA, granddaughter Jessica Israel Rapoport & her husband Brandon of Oak Park, CA, many cousins stretching from SoCal to Idaho to South Dakota, as well as numerous friends, including his Taco Tuesday gang, his OPT hiking group and fellow Hughes retirees. Roland was preceded in death by his wife Lois (1980), his in-laws Belle and Spike (Roland) Walker, parents Pauline & Jack Wilson and Lawrence Bassett.
Roland’s legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His gentle soul, unwavering faith, integrity, compassion and sense of humor will continue to inspire us.
A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, December 7th at 10am, St. John Eudes Catholic Church, 9901 Mason Avenue Chatsworth, California.
