

Thomas Gordon Hastings died unexpectedly on February 11, 2018 at the age of 65, when his
Cirrus VK-30 went down in the hills near Santa Clarita, California, along with his daughter
Amber Hill, her daughter Madison Hastings-Saxelby, and her husband Jacob Hill. Thomas is
survived by his wife Joyce Hastings, daughter Kassandra Courtney, son Jake Hastings, brothers David Hastings, Robin
Hastings, Timothy Hastings, and sister Dianne Hastings. He is preceded in death by his father,
William Harris Hastings, mother, Patricia Laura Hastings, and niece, Breanna
Hastings-Rodriguez.
Thomas was born August 5, 1952 in Baltimore Maryland, second of five children born to William
and Patricia Hastings. He graduated from Chatsworth High School in 1970, earned an
Associate in Science degree at Pierce College, Winnetka, enlisted in the Marines in July 1972,
and served until 1978. He later married Joyce Lehart on June 14th, 1986 and had two children:
Jake in 1987 and Amber in 1990. He worked as a mechanical designer for a number of
companies, last of which was Haas Automation in Oxnard, California.
Tom was passionate about aviation (that’s putting it mildly) and was an active member of the
Experimental Aircraft Association, Van Nuys Chapter 40 for many years. He enjoyed flying over
900 missions for the Young Eagles Program.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 24, 2018 at St.Joseph the
Worker Catholic Church, 19851 Sherman Way, Winnetka, CA 91306 (Facing Sherman Way
between Winnetka Ave. and Corbin Ave). All are welcome to attend and celebrate Tom’s life.
Reception following the ceremony, location to be announced at the service.
