October 17, 1930 – April 23, 2023
Zoye Marino Fidler passed away after a brief illness at home with family around
her. She was 92. Zoye was born in Seattle, the first of two daughters of Greek
immigrant parents, Marinos Marinopoulos and Erene Frangopoulou. She
graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1948 and attended the University of
Washington until she married Jim Fidler in 1952. They raised their three children
in the same family home she grew up in. Zoye had a lifelong interest her Greek
heritage and a deep-rooted desire to give back to her community. She was involved
with many cultural and church activities throughout her life.
In the years following her divorce she decided to make a transformational change
and moved to Southern California, settling in Los Angeles where she lived the past
four decades. She worked as a top-performing sales representative for a technology
company, and in various administrative positions for the Jewish Federation of
Greater Los Angeles, until her retirement in 1999.
Devout and deeply spiritual, Zoye was an active member of Saint Nicholas Greek
Orthodox Church, where she organized educational church tours during the annual
Valley Greek Festival. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics she was liaison for
the Greek Olympic team. In 1985 she co-founded the Greek Heritage Society of
Southern California, and served as president for many years. Her desire to
document oral histories of the Greek American immigrant experience eventually
became the impetus for three award-winning documentary films that covered a
span from 1900 – 2018. In 2009 she was awarded the prestigious Theodore Saloutos
Award by the American Hellenic Council.
For those who had the privilege of experiencing her hospitality, Zoye was known as
a welcoming and enthusiastic host. She delighted in putting together gatherings of
friends and family for any occasion, and there was always room at her table.
Zoye’s life wasn’t always easy, but she was relentless in her commitment to make
the most of it.
Zoye was pre-deceased by her parents and her sister Marian Skarpelos. She is
survived by children: William Fidler (Alia Pirzada), Zoye Marinopoulou (Charmaine
Slye), James Marinopoulos, granddaughters Anne and Amalia (Phil), and great
grandchildren: Marino, Loretta, and Spyridon.
