Born on January 24, 1942, in Norwich, CT she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Edna (Green) Brown. In 1964, she married the late Dubie Sowell, Jr. Together, they shared 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2015.
She was the last surviving sibling, predeceased by Edward, Earl, Gene, Louis, Michael, Ernest, Patricia (Brown) Sebastian, and Richard Brown - all cherished members of the New London County community. A proud member of the Norwich Free Academy Class of 1960, she built a life rich with love and devotion. At the age of 22, she met and fell deeply in love with her lifelong husband, Dubie Sowell, Jr. of Chesterfield County, SC. Their love story began in Norwich, where they exchanged vows on December 21, 1964, embarking on a beautiful journey together. Side by side, they raised four wonderful children, Ms. Alice M. (Sowell) McCall of Germantown, MD, Mr. Dubie T. Sowell of Colchester, CT, Mr. Carlos A. (Egle) Sowell of Saint Johns, FL, and Mr. Kele I. She found immense joy in nature, dancing, and sharing music spanning the 60s through the 90s. She delighted in making others smile, ensuring those around her felt warmth and happiness. Her vibrant energy was felt in every family gathering, every shared laugh, and every heartfelt embrace. A woman of many talents, she worked in various occupations, but none brought her more fulfillment than her role as a Town of Colchester Public School Bus Driver. She took great pride in greeting and caring for the students, ensuring their safety and brightening their days with her ever-present smile—a reflection of her deeply compassionate nature.
She had a special place in her heart for her pets, cherishing the love and companionship of her dog, Henry, and cat, Sky. She adored home-cooked meals, exploring new and exciting places, and most of all, making unforgettable memories with her family. Whether cheering for her grandsons at basketball and baseball games, watching her granddaughters perform in plays and track meets, or simply sharing stories and laughter, she found endless joy in the love she gave and received. Her infectious spirit was especially evident in her love for pineapple juice, which she claimed gave her the energy to dance even more.
She will always be remembered for her radiant laughter, warm smiles, strong hugs, and boundless kindness. Her legacy of love and light will live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known and loved her. Though she now resides with her Creator, Lord, and Savior, she will be deeply missed, and her memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration.
