

Charles J. Luty Sr., age 97, of 20 Julian Drive in Preston passed away on Thursday, October 23rd while at home with family. He was predeceased by his wife Wanda to whom he was happily married for 72 years. He was born November 14, 1916 to Joseph and Antonina (Bryzicki) Luty. He grew up in Uncasville and graduated from Chapman Tech High School in New London where he was an outstanding baseball and football player. During WWII, he enlisted in the US Navy Seabees to help in the war effort until his Honorable Discharge.
Charlie was a machinist all of his life and retired to Hallandale, Florida after owning and operating Nutmeg Tool & Products Company in Preston for many years. He loved life, family, and fishing. He lived to fish and owned a boat for almost his entire life. His best fishing experiences were in Rhode Island waters out of Point Judith for 38 years and then 22 years of fishing in Florida waters out of Hallandale before moving back to Preston in 2010. He holds the State record for the largest white marlin (125 lbs) ever caught in Rhode Island waters. It is still unsurpassed after 25 years. He was an amazing physical specimen. For his 90th birthday he bought himself a new 25’ Mako fishing boat and was still going off-shore fishing on a regular basis. Up until moving back to Connecticut at age 93, he was swimming 22 laps in the pool every day.
He is survived by his two sons, Charles “Jack” Luty and his wife Cindy of Preston;Gerald “Jerry” Luty and his wife Kathy of Ledyard; two grandchildren, Bethany Luty Grice and her husband John of Yantic; and David Luty and his wife Julie of Preston; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Owen Luty of Preston; a step-grandson, Gene Przekop and his wife Jennifer of Griswold, and their two children Haley and Sydney; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by all of his nine siblings, six brothers and three sisters.
There will be a Funeral Mass on Tuesday, October 28th at 1:30 p.m. at The Cathedral of St. Patrick, 213 Broadway, Norwich, Connecticut. Arrangements are being made by the Labenski Funeral Home of Norwich. There will be a reception following the Mass at the Pautipaug Country Club at 7 Dows Road in Baltic.

Also thanks to the staff of the Ross Adult Day Center of Norwich for the care and affection they showed him every Monday through Friday for the past two years.
