Claire Wallen age 86, of Uncasville, Connecticut passed away on April 6, 2024. Born in Norwich, Connecticut, she was the daughter of John and Edna Phillips. She graduated from Norwich Free Academy and married her high school sweetheart, Russell Wallen. She then moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina while Russ was in the Marines and upon his discharge they returned to Connecticut. She worked at Friendly’s part time where she meet Mr. Brown the owner of Johnson’s Flowers and Gifts. He offered her a position as a bookkeeper and her career in flowers bloomed. She would take any opportunity she had to help the floral designers and quickly learned the basics of floral design. She continued her education by taking master floral classes. When Mr. Brown retired in the mid-1980s, Claire bought the shop and continued to run the business until November 2023. In addition to her love for flowers was the love for her family and friends that she considered family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Wallen. She is survived by her daughter Debra Richert, son-in-law Arthur Richert, granddaughter Courtney Hebert and her husband Eric Hebert, granddaughter Melanie Archer and her husband Richard Archer and her great granddaughter Vivienne Hebert.
A private graveside ceremony for the immediate family will be held on April 15th. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 on Saturday, June 1st at Ledyard Congregational Church located at 722 Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard, CT 06339.
