Eugene Patrick Sullivan, Jr., known to all as “Kip,” passed peacefully on October 13, 2025, at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, surrounded by his loving family. His departure marks the end of a life full of devotion, humor, and unwavering loyalty.
He was born on August 22, 1945, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to the late Eugene Patrick Sullivan and Elaine (Shea) Sullivan. Kip served his country in the U.S. Navy, then went on to serve his community with honor in the Connecticut State Police, retiring at the rank of captain.
Beyond his career, Kip was a pillar of strength and encouragement to his family. He was always the loudest cheerleader: celebrating triumphs, comforting through trials, and standing by his loved ones without question. His loyalty was steadfast, his faith in those he loved unwavering.
Kip’s sense of humor was a defining trait. He had a knack for lightening heavy days with a well-timed joke, a playful grin, or a witty remark. His laughter was a gift to all who knew him, and even in sorrow, his humor continues to ripple through memories. He was a thoughtful, kind man whose generosity and warmth touched many. He gave freely of his time, shared wisdom without hesitation, and made each person around him feel seen, supported, and loved. Through his actions, he showed what it means to live with integrity, compassion, and heart.
Kip is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Susan Wilson Sullivan; his daughters, Amanda LaSaracina and her husband, Chris, of Colchester; and Sarah Tilton and her husband, Michael, of Crofton, Maryland. He leaves behind the apple of his eyes, his five grandchildren: Colin and Luke LaSaracina, and Kira, Brady, and Landon Tilton. He leaves a brother, James Sullivan, of Carlsbad, CA. He also leaves behind a brother in law, Joseph Gravel, numerous adored nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of family and friends who will forever carry his love and spirit with them.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Brian Sullivan; his sister, Noreen Sullivan Gravel; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Cousins Sullivan; nephews, Daniel and Robert Gravel; a niece, Tami Rigby; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Martin.
Family and friends are invited to visit Church & Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem Street, Norwich, on Friday, October 17th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 18th at St. Patrick Cathedral, 213 Broadway, Norwich. Immediately following, he will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery, 815 Boswell Avenue, Norwich.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Kip’s memory to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 223 W. Jackson Blvd., Suite 350, Chicago, IL 60606.
May we honor and remember him by carrying forward his laughter, his love, and his faith in us. He will forever remain our champion, our guiding light, and our eternal source of joy.
