Griswold- George Justus Sparrow passed away Friday, July 8, 2022, at Hartford Hospital with his daughters at his bedside. He was born in New London, CT on August 4, 1933 to George E. Sparrow and Thelma Hoate, both deceased. He was raised in Norwich by his foster parents Rev. T.D. and Lucinda Ross whom he often spoke fondly of and developed a lifelong bond with his three foster brothers Nate Lewis, Clayton Ford and Eddie Good.
George proudly served in the United States Air Force. After coming home from the service, he worked for over 40 years at the former Norwich Iron & Metal as a yardman. Upon retiring he worked for many years at the former Pic-A-Deli restaurant in the Norwichtown Mall. He also supported The Salvation Army for many years, manning their red kettles at Christmas time. He truly enjoyed seeing all the kids so excited for Christmas and knowing they would have something under their tree on Christmas morning, in part, because of The Salvation Army’s red kettle. George’s favorite place to be was with his family. He also enjoyed watching sports and was a life-long New York Yankees and New York Giants fan.
He was predeceased by the love of his life Patricia Ocelik. Although he and Pat only had one daughter together, Genevieve, he would always say he and Pat had five girls. He proudly and honorably raised, not only his daughter, but Pat’s other four girls after her death. He is survived by his daughters Genevieve Sparrow, Georgia Lavallee (Robert Rhoades, Sr.), Brenda Curtis with whom he made his home, Jean Ocelik, Judy Malave (Alberto). Grandchildren Robert Rhoades, Jr. (Jessica), Geoffrey Rhoades, Dillin Rhoades, Shanice Rhoades, Noah Rhoades, Emmanuel Echavarria (Shareena), Karol Yates (Jared), Michael Johnson, Jr., Aaryn Ocelik, Shailyn Golden, Jaxson Ocelik, Emily Allard-Ocelik, Lucas, Jacob Rhoades, Brandon Rhoades, Hannah Rhoades and great grandchildren Landon, Mia, Gabrien, Angel, Ayden, Jayson, Gracy, Connor, Aubrey, Alex, Harper, Delaney, and Kaleb. He was predeceased by a grandson Sean Green (Jessica) and a great granddaughter Grace Rhoades.
George leaves a legacy of unconditional love, loyalty, hard work and integrity. He is loved and respected by all who were fortunate enough to know him, love him and be unconditionally loved by him.
