December 3, 1945 – October 18, 2025
Harlan Gene Gahner, 79, of Norwich, Connecticut, formerly of North Dakota, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 18, 2025, surrounded by so much love and comfort from his family.
Born on December 3, 1945, in Jamestown, North Dakota, Harlan was the son of the late Otto & Joyce (Kinslow) Gahner.
Harlan served proudly in the US Navy as a Seabee during the Vietnam War. A lifelong mechanic for over 40 years, Harlan had a gift for fixing things—not only engines, but hearts. Working on cars was his passion, and he had a special love for muscle cars and older cars. In his downtime, he would play with his favorite friend, Meme the cat.
He was the sweetest, most caring man—a true hero to those who were lucky enough to know him.
His greatest joy came from helping others. Harlan had a way of making every day feel special. Whether he was stopping by to leave a small gift, planting bulbs in his granddaughter’s yard, or showing up with bags full of stuffed animals to brighten his great-granddaughter’s day, Harlan spread love in every way imaginable. His thoughtfulness and gentle spirit made life magical for his family.
Harlan is survived by his beloved daughters: Theresa Mardin and her husband Michael of Norwich, and Tina Haddock and her husband Chris of Vernon.
He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Courtney Dyer and her husband Garrett of Norwich, Travis Herman and his partner Isabella O'Brien of East Haddam, and Jazmine Alba & Sasha Alba of Jewett City.
Harlan was also the adored great-grandfather of five: Tatyana Dyer, Alexavier Gahner, Amara Dyer, Luciana Herman, and Ivy Herman.
He is also survived by his companion Shelby Gross and his siblings: two brothers, Tracy Gahner of West Fargo, ND, and Brent Gahner and his wife Vicki of Uncasville; and two sisters, Darlene Gahner of Jamestown, ND, and Brenda Dale and her husband Richard of Crookston, MN.
He leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews: Travis, Marquita, TJ, Theodise, Louette, Martine, and Rachel.
In addition to his parents, Harlan was predeceased by his sister, Carolyn Brown.
Harlan's life was one of love, service, and generosity. His warmth will live on in the hearts of those he touched and in the countless beautiful moments he created. He will be deeply missed, but his love will continue to bloom—in every story told, every smile shared, and every flower that grows where he once planted.
