

John served in the Korean War as a RM2 in the United States Navy. He later received Chef training at Northeastern University. He moved to Hampton, CT with his wife and family in 1970 to work for the Department of Dining Services, UCONN, Storrs campus. John and Alice retired to North Port, Florida in 1995. John was an avid Red Sox fan and loved to play cards, especially cribbage. He enjoyed spending time with his family often entertaining them with witty conversation.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings. Raymond, Thomas, Joanne, Francis, Richard, Joseph, James, and his stepson Timothy Hutchinson. He is survived by his brothers Ralph, Charlie and sister Carol from MA and brother Leo from NC. He leaves behind his children Linda and Michael McClure of Brooklyn, Paul and Debbie Dumphy of Franklin, Pam and Frank Bass of Windham, John and Jeanne Dumphy of Columbia, Susanne Farrar of North Grosvenordale and Barry and Linda Hutchinson of Cape Cod; 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. with a service at 4 p.m. on Saturday July 30, 2016 at the Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich, CT . Relatives and friends may call prior to the service from 2 to 4 p.m. Burial will be privately held at the convenience of the family.
