Leonard was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 14, 1927 to Isaac and Henrietta (Stutsky) Zuckerbraun. He graduated from Griswold High School in 1945 and served in the US Army, receiving an Honorable Discharge. He attended the University of Connecticut and graduated from Massachusetts College of Optometry in Boston. Upon graduation Leonard had the opportunity to open his optometric practice anywhere within the State of Connecticut. However, the only place he ever wanted to work was in his hometown of Jewett City. He never hid his devotion to Jewett City or its residents. Leonard maintained his Jewett City optometric practice for 50 years until his retirement. Shortly after establishing his practice he met and married his perfect match, Irene (Liebenau). Leonard and Irene were married at Temple Beth El in New London, CT on June 20,1954.
Always the gentleman, Leonard was known for his sense of self-deprecating sense of humor and tremendous work ethic. Family was the most important thing in Leonard’s life, and his unwavering support of his sons’ personal and professional pursuits was evidence of his commitment to his family. Professionally, he was involved in his community as a corporator of the Jewett City Savings Bank and as a Life Member of the CT Assoc. of Optometrists.
Besides his wife Irene, he is survived by his sons Joel of Waterford, David and his partner Gail DeMarco of Niantic, and Kurt and his wife Mariflor of Aliso Viejo, CA., and one sister, Florence Polens of Oneonta, NY. He was predeceased by his brother Jerome.
The Zuckerbraun family would like to acknowledge the kindness and professionalism of the healthcare staff at Apple Rehab Mystic. Their efforts to make Dr. Z’s life as comfortable as possible have not gone unnoticed.
A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8th at 1pm at Hebrew Benevolent Cemetery #3, Middle Rd., Preston, CT. Shiva schedule will be announced at the service and online.
