Lowell D. Calkins

He was born on April 25, 1937 in Norwich, Connecticut to the late Perlin and Marion (Krohn) Calkins. Lowell was married to his wife Alice (Avery) Calkins for 60 years and resided in Preston Connecticut.

After graduating from Norwich Free Academy, he worked for the State of Connecticut - Department of Transportation in various positions during his 40 years of service. Lowell retired as a Safety Advisor based out of the Norwich office in 1997.

He loved being outdoors, especially when it came to working on the landscaping of his property. After retiring from his second job as Director of Security at the Plainfield Dog Track, he spent time traveling and working part time at Walmart in the garden center to keep himself busy.

Lowell was a member of the Preston City Congregational Church in Preston. He sang in the choir and held various positions including Trustee and Deacon in the church. He was also very active, participating in church events, especially with Vacation Bible School in the summer with his grandchildren.

Lowell is survived by his wife Alice (Avery) Calkins of Preston; a son David and his wife Lynette of Wallingford. He also leaves behind his two grandchildren Sienna and Savannah; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Perlin and Marion and his sister Judith Fox.

Family & Friends are encouraged to attend a funeral service at Preston City Congregational Church, Preston CT on Thursday June 26th at 11:00 am, with a reception immediately following the service in the church hall. Departure at approximately 2:00 pm for burial at Maplewood Cemetery in Norwich CT.
