

Ralph P. Leupold October 5, 1918 - March 5, 2013 Canterbury - Ralph P. Leupold, 94, of 285 Wauregan Road, Canterbury, died early Tuesday morning at Backus Hospital. Born in the Taftville section of Norwich on October 5, 1918, he was the son of the late Adam and Mary (Pollard) Leupold. In 1920 he moved to Lisbon with his family where he attended local schools. After graduating from Norwich Free Academy in 1936, he was assigned as a U.S. Maritime Commission cadet aboard United States Lines vessels in the European trade. In 1940, he was called to active duty in the U.S. Navy and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Lt. Cmdr. On August 2, 1947, he was united in marriage in the First Congregational Church in Stockton, California to the former Marilyn Colby, who survives him. Ralph graduated from the University of Nevada in 1950, after which he returned to New York City to work for Grace Lines in the South American trade retiring in 1973 as a Master of the S/S Santa Clara. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Canterbury; The Council of American Master Mariners and the Moosup Lodge #113 AF & AM. Besides his wife Marilyn he leaves two daughters, Phyllis Tela and her husband David, Carol Zujewski and her husband Vincent and two grandchildren Maxwell and Cara. At his request, services and internment will be private. There is no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of Canterbury; Day Kimball HomeCare or to the charity of the donor's choice.
