Teddy was born in Willimantic Connecticut, August 26,1927. The eldest child to Jacob and Mollie Hertz. Teddy attended Norwich Free Academy but left to enlist in the US Army to serve his country in World War II. A private first class Veteran in the Pacific Theater, Teddy was honorably discharged in 1947 and then met the love of his life Anne (Yoser) Hertz and wed on June 5, 1949. After his tour of duty, Ted followed in his family's legacy into a career of meat cutting starting at Beit Brothers and then First National Stores until his retirement in 1992. Teddy was an avid sports fan. A love for the New York Yankees and UConn Basketball, Teddy would never miss a game unless, of course, it was during his "stories" which he would then have to make a tough decision between the two. A truth teller to the core, Teddy was the family historian, he could tell you all about the good ole' days of Norwich, his aunt's penny candy shop and the Hertz family meat market. He could carve a turkey like no one else, regardless of how it was cooked or even the size. He could magically turn a normal sized 14 lb turkey to a 12 lb serving right before it hit the family table. Teddy would share stories of his days in the service and his time growing up with his brother playing Cowboys and Indians. In his younger years Teddy could be found playing horseshoes with his friends or searching for new ones on his CB radio as T-Bone. He enjoyed country music and he had a passion for watching western and war movies and the game shows. A prideful man, Teddy was most proud of his family. He cherished the time spent with them. He enjoyed the summers at the beach with his kids, classic wrestling matches with his son and nephews, days at Betty and Bill's cottage trying to water ski and a hot fresh lobster traditionally in June. He never missed any of his grandchildren's important milestones. He was a self proclaimed "fix it" man and a personal tailor to his family, anything from fixing buttons to car engine repair Teddy would make the attempt to "fix it". In his later years he became a personal chef, a king with the crock pot, his meals had flavor like no one else's. A proud home owner Teddy remained in his home for which he first bought in 1959 helping to enforce his personal position as captain on the local neighborhood watch. He was a protector and would always you remind you to never leave your gas tank less than half full during a snow storm and resist the urge the drive home when it was very late at night. His driving ability was unmatched, regardless if he was in the driver's seat or in the passenger's seat, he knew how to drive and could tell you every back road to get you there. The love story between him and his wife was one for the storybooks and his devotion to her was unmatched. Teddy was a loyal and honorable soul that promised his wife he would be by her side till the end. This was a promise he didn't take lightly. Even in her most difficult years of health, he met her with his smile every day.
In additional to his parents, Teddy was predeceased by his wife Anne of 69 years and his younger brother Leonard Hertz. Teddy survived with the love of his four beautiful children, Three daughters, Cheryl Latman of Norwich, Judith (Robert) Disch of Niantic, and Eileen "Wendy" Berman of Montville and one son Michael Hertz of Norwich. Teddy was surrounded with love by his seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
