
Denny was born on October 25, 1935 in South Plymouth the son of Clayton and Ida (Frink) Bates, and grew up on a dairy farm. He attended grades 1-7 in German Hollow in a one room schoolhouse, grades 8-11 in Norwich, and then grade 12 in Sherburne when the school district changed. Denny continued his education by attending Electrical School in Chicago.
A veteran of the United States Army, Denny served his country from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1957. He enlisted as a Private E-1 and was promoted up the ranks to Corporal First Class.
Following along with his farming heritage, Denny operated his own farm from 1964-1991. He truly loved his Holstein cows, John Deere tractors and making hay. He was also an electrician for many years in the local area as well as for the Chenango County Fair for a period of 53 years. The history of Plymouth was very important to him. He was a force in helping to maintain the Plymouth Depot and was a regular attendee of Plymouth Days. He looked forward to his annual trips to the Adirondacks and West Winfield on Memorial Day. He also enjoyed Sunday dinners, a tradition started by his parents and later carried on by his daughter.
Family was very important to Denny. He was a spectacular father to his children and to many others who did not have a father figure in their lives. Denny was very proud of his children, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
Denny really enjoyed spending time with his numerous friends who he visited often. He was known for his great sense of humor and endless desire to make people smile. Although Denny will be missed dearly by his family and friends, his memory will live on in their hearts forever.
Denny is survived by his wife Bettylou whom he met at a square dance and married in 1961, his son Daniel (Kelly) Bates of Norwich, his daughter Judy (Joe) Dushko of Sherburne and a special brother Vern Meeker of Ohio. Also surviving are his grandchildren Carrie Hitt of Earlville, Lindsey (Derrick) Symonds of Earlville, Kyle Bates and girlfriend Gabby Megale of Greene and Tyler Bates of Norwich, his great grandchildren Michael and Nicholas Hitt and Kendall Symonds. Several cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends also survive along with a very special cousin Helen Mauzy of Homer.
Denny was predeceased by his parents Clayton and Ida Bates, brothers Ted and George Bates and sister June Cooley and her husband Norman.
A funeral service for Denny will be held on Tuesday, July 12th at 12:00 pm followed by burial in the Wilcox Cemetery.
Friends may call at the R.J.Fahy Funeral Home on Monday, July 11th from 6:00-8:00 pm or Tuesday, July 12th from 11:00 to 12:00 prior to the funeral.
Per Denny's wishes, donations in his memory may be made to Betty Bates, 515 County Road 29, Norwich, NY 13815 for the establishment of a college fund for his great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much.
