M. Dorothy Massey

Dr. Massey was the daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth (Coughlin) and Francis Allen Massey, and predeceased by one brother, Captain Francis Allen Massey, III. She is survived by two nephews and a niece, Craig A. Massey of Oakland, NJ, Stephen D. Massey of Middleboro, MA, and Elizabeth Sawyer of Plymouth, MA. Also survived by numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Dr. Massey was a Professor Emeritus from the University of Rhode Island. She served as the Chairman of Women’s Physical Education for 25 years. Dr. Massey also directed the Women’s Athletic and Intramural Programs during those years.

Her undergraduate degree was from Tufts University and she earned her M.S. in Education and Ed. D. from Boston University. She was active professionally serving in top professional leadership roles at the state, regional, national, and international positions earning numerous Honor Awards for her service.

Dr. Massey authored numerous articles in professional journals and text books. She earned election to Pi Kappa Phi, Pi Lambda Theta and the American Academy of Physical Education on Kinesiology, and Chi Omega Sorority.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 10:00am in St. Timothy Church, 650 Nichols Street, Norwood, MA. Interment will follow the Mass in Highland Cemetery, Norwood. There will be no visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. M. Dorothy Massey Student Scholarship Fund at URI or the American Cancer Society Research.
