SHIELD, William F. (“Bill”), age 93, longtime resident of Norwood, MA, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 13, 2022. The son of the late Mary A. (Gaffney), and William J. Shield, Bill was born in Medford, MA and grew up in Brattleboro, VT. Beloved husband of the late Margaret “Peg” (Dempsey); loving father of Denis W. Shield and his wife Denise of Walpole, David F. Shield of Mansfield, and Arleen M. Shield of Berlin, CT; cherished “Papa” of Patrick, Paul, Robert, Christopher, Timothy, Molly, William, Emma, Hunter; great grandpapa of Beau; devoted brother of the late Jack, Paul, Kenneth, George, and survived by brother Philip and sister Marie (Mallat). He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Bill was a graduate of Brattleboro High School, where he held several class offices including Class President and Treasurer and enjoyed playing for the school’s football, baseball, and basketball teams. Bill attended Wentworth Institute (’50) where he enjoyed playing for the school’s football team as the team captain. He graduated with a Bachelor of Technology and was inducted as a member of the Black and Gold Society. After serving in the US Army between 1950 - 1952, Bill returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Tri-State University (’55), where he was a member of the Mechanical Engineering Society, the Civil Engineering Society, and member of the Phi Kappa Fraternity.
Bill enjoyed skiing as an original member of the Brettl-Hupfer Ski Club, where he met his wife Peg of 51 years. After their marriage together in 1962, Bill and Peg settled in Norwood where they enjoyed raising their children and “puttering” around the house. After his retirement from FM Global in 1993, he enjoyed his time gardening with the Norwood Garden Club, golfing with his friends in the Senior League, and discovering the game of Bocci at the Norwood Senior Center. Bill will long be remembered for his good-natured temperament, sincere interest in everyone he meets, plus an honest desire to help anyone he can.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Friday, May 20th in St. Timothy Church, 650 Nichols Street, Norwood. Interment will follow the Mass in Highland Cemetery, Norwood. Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Thursday, May 19th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Gillooly Funeral Home.
